Article Published in “Kommersant” with Comment by Alexey Vakhnin

On March 22, 2025, the leading Russian business newspaper Kommersant published an article titled “Application for Intellectual Success”, dedicated to the results of 2024 in the field of international patenting.

The material presents WIPO data showing a 4% increase in the number of Russian international patent applications under the PCT system (709 applications compared to 681 in 2023). At the same time, the article highlights the difficulties faced by Russian companies when filing applications abroad.

Alexey Vakhnin, President of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys and Partner at Vakhnina & Partners, provided an expert commentary:

“The statistics on PCT applications are correct, but not fully representative, because there are currently many problems with filing international applications. Russian companies face suspension of payments by foreign banks, and due to the rising exchange rates of the dollar and euro, such applications have become very expensive.”
